The White Box Project

The Database for Racial Classification Fraud

This beta includes the five largest counties in Florida with readily available police booking records that include both race data and mugshots. For each county, the project indexed and analyzed booking records covering a 30-day period. Counties without publicly available race data or mugshots were excluded. See the About section for a full description of the methodology.

A sample of documented classification errors — records where a reviewer found the recorded race field to be a confirmed or likely error.

Confirmed error rates are calculated as Confirmed Errors ÷ Records Marked White. The combined rate is calculated as (Confirmed Errors + Likely Errors) ÷ Records Marked White. Every record is human-reviewed. Confirmed errors are supported by human review and corroborating evidence; likely errors have been reviewed by a human but lack sufficient evidence for confirmation.
